Established 1987

An optical centre at Queensway, run the old way

Thirty-eight years in one shop, fitting spectacles for families who keep coming back and now bring their children.

Hands of an experienced optician adjusting a spectacle frame at AZ Optics Centre
Our story

The shop has not moved. Neither has the standard

AZ Optics Centre opened at Queensway Shopping Centre in 1987 and has stayed there ever since. It is not a chain, there is no second branch, and the person who measures your eyes is the person who fits your frame and the person you come back to when something is not right.

That continuity is the whole point. A prescription is a snapshot; vision is a trend. Knowing what your eyes were doing three years ago is worth more than any single test, and it is something only the same optician in the same shop can give you.

How we work

Four commitments

Time
A first examination is booked for a full hour. Not because it always takes an hour, but because it sometimes does, and a queue is a poor reason to stop asking questions.
Measurement
Progressive and customised lenses are centred on the ZEISS i.Terminal 2 digital system, in the frame you have actually chosen, in your natural posture.
Honesty
If your current spectacles are fine, we will tell you they are fine. If a cheaper lens does the job for how you use your eyes, that is the lens we will recommend.
Aftercare
Adjustment, alignment and a second opinion on how a new prescription is settling are part of buying from us, not a separate transaction.
Accreditation

Partnered where it counts

Authorised partner status is not a marketing badge. It means the manufacturer has trained us on their product, that the equipment on our floor is theirs, and that what you are sold is genuine and traceable.

Eye examination and eye test in Singapore

A full vision check-up at Queensway: eyesight test, prescription, and a proper conversation about the lenses that suit how you actually use your eyes.

Book Your Eye Test
The appointment

What the hour actually includes

Vision test
A measured check of how clearly each eye sees, at distance and near, and how the two work together.
Prescription
Your current correction established and compared against what you were wearing, so change is visible rather than assumed.
Myopia evaluation
Where short-sightedness is present, an assessment of where it sits now and whether it is moving.
Frame and lens advice
What you read, drive, screen-watch and work on decides the lens. That conversation is the part most people have never been offered.
Digital centration
If you proceed, your fitting measurements are taken on the ZEISS i.Terminal 2 in the frame you have chosen.

Why an hour, and not fifteen minutes

A fifteen-minute test can produce a technically accurate prescription and still send you home with spectacles you dislike. The number is the easy part. What takes time is finding out that you spend six hours a day on two screens at different distances, or that you drive at night, or that your last progressives never felt right and you never said so.

How often to have your eyes tested

Most adults with stable vision are checked every two years. Come sooner if you are straining at screens, holding things further away to read, getting headaches by late afternoon, or noticing glare when driving at night. Children whose myopia is progressing are monitored far more frequently, which is a separate conversation.

Common questions

Before you book

Do I need an appointment for an eye test?
Booking is recommended, because the examination is scheduled as a full hour and that hour is held for you. You are welcome to walk in and we will fit you in where we can, but the diary is the safer route.
How long does an eye examination take?
The appointment is booked for one hour. That covers the vision test, the prescription, the discussion about lenses, and the digital fitting measurements if you go ahead with spectacles on the day.
What should I bring?
Your current spectacles, any spare pairs you still use, and your most recent prescription if you have it. If you wear contact lenses, bring the box or the details of what you are currently in.
Can you test children?
Yes. Children’s vision is examined here and, where short-sightedness is progressing, managed with Essilor Stellest or HOYA MiyoSmart lenses and monitored over time.
Where are you and what are your opening hours?
1 Queensway, Queensway Shopping Centre #01-39, Singapore 149053. We are open Monday to Sunday, 10.30am to 9pm.

Progressive lenses, centred to the millimetre

High-end progressive and anti-fatigue lenses, digitally fitted so the clear corridor lands where your eyes actually travel rather than where a ruler guessed.

Book a Lens Consultation
The principle

One lens, three distances, no line

A progressive lens carries your distance prescription at the top, your reading prescription at the bottom, and a gradual change between the two. There is no visible line and no second pair to carry. Most people over forty end up in them.

The trade-off is that the clear zone narrows as it descends, which is why fit matters more here than in any other lens. Get the centration right and you stop noticing the lens within a week. Get it wrong and you spend a year tilting your head.

Macro photograph of a progressive spectacle lens edge refracting light
Spectacle centration being measured at AZ Optics Centre Singapore
Why we measure digitally

Two millimetres is the whole difference

The corridor of clear vision in a progressive lens is narrow by design. If it is positioned two millimetres off your true pupil centre, the periphery swims, stairs become unnerving, and reading drifts off to one side.

The ZEISS i.Terminal 2 captures your fitting position digitally, wearing the actual frame, in your natural head posture. It replaces the marker pen and the ruler with a measurement you can see on screen, and it is the single biggest reason a progressive lens either works or does not.

Lens types we fit

Matched to how you use your eyes

01

Progressive

Distance, intermediate and near in a single lens with no visible line. The default choice once reading glasses start appearing on every table in the house.

02

Anti-fatigue

A small amount of reading support built into the lower lens for people who are not yet in progressives but spend all day on screens and feel it by evening.

03

Customised single vision

Personalised to your frame, your fitting position and your habitual working distances rather than a stock curve.

What progressive lenses cost, and why the range is wide

Price follows the lens design rather than the frame. A wider clear corridor and a gentler blend cost more to manufacture, and the stronger your prescription the more that difference is worth. We will quote you in the chair once we know your prescription, your frame and how you use your eyes, and we will tell you plainly when the more expensive design would not earn its money for you.

Lens partners. ZEISS, Essilor, HOYA, Kodak and Shamir. Which manufacturer suits you depends on your prescription, your frame and how you use your eyes, and it is a decision made in the chair rather than from a website.
Common questions

About progressives

How long does it take to get used to progressive lenses?
Most people adapt within one to two weeks if the lens is centred correctly. Wear them full time during that period rather than switching back and forth, which is what usually prolongs it. If something still feels wrong after a fortnight, come back and we will check the fit rather than tell you to persevere.
Why are some progressive lenses so much more expensive than others?
The difference is the width of the clear corridor and how gently the prescription changes across it. A more advanced design gives you a wider usable zone and less distortion at the edges, which matters more the stronger your prescription and the more time you spend in the intermediate range.
Can I put progressive lenses in my existing frame?
Often yes, provided the frame is deep enough for the corridor and structurally sound. Bring it in and we will measure it. A frame that is too shallow will compress the reading zone into something unusable, which is worth knowing before rather than after.
Do you do progressive contact lenses?
Multifocal contact lenses are fitted here as part of a contact lens consultation. They work differently from spectacle progressives and suit some prescriptions better than others.

Children’s myopia control in Singapore

Spectacle lenses designed to slow how quickly a child’s short-sightedness worsens, fitted and monitored at Queensway.

Book a Myopia Assessment
A child wearing round spectacles fitted for myopia control at AZ Optics Centre
Why it matters

A stronger prescription every year is not inevitable

Singapore has one of the highest rates of childhood myopia in the world. Most parents are told the same thing each visit: the prescription has gone up again, here is a stronger pair, see you next year.

Myopia control lenses are designed to change that trajectory. They correct your child’s vision like an ordinary lens, and at the same time carry a structure across the periphery intended to slow the eye’s elongation, which is what drives the prescription upwards.

The aim is not a cure. It is a lower final prescription in adulthood, and the lower that number ends up, the smaller the long-term risk that comes with high myopia.

The two lenses we fit

Stellest and MiyoSmart

Essilor

Stellest

Essilor’s myopia management lens, worn as an ordinary pair of spectacles. We are an Essilor Partner, so Stellest is fitted here from an authorised source with the monitoring that should accompany it.

HOYA

MiyoSmart

HOYA’s myopia control lens, again worn as a normal pair of glasses. Which of the two suits your child depends on their prescription, their age and how fast it has been moving.

Neither lens works on its own. Myopia control is a programme, not a purchase. It depends on consistent full-time wear and on returning for measurement so the rate of change can actually be seen. We will tell you at the outset what that commitment looks like.
How it runs

Assess, fit, measure, repeat

The value is in the follow-up. A single fitting tells you nothing about whether the approach is working for your child.

AssessmentA full examination including where the myopia sits now, and a look back at previous prescriptions to establish how fast it has been moving.
DiscussionWhether myopia control is appropriate, which lens suits, and an honest account of what it can and cannot be expected to do.
FittingFrame selection that a child will genuinely wear all day, and digital centration so the lens sits correctly.
MonitoringScheduled reviews to measure change rather than guess at it, and to adjust the plan if the numbers say so.
Parents ask

Common questions

At what age should my child start myopia control?
As soon as myopia is diagnosed and showing signs of progressing. The younger a child becomes short-sighted, the more years of progression lie ahead, which is exactly why early management has the most to offer. Bring them in and we will assess.
Will my child have to wear the lenses all the time?
Yes, and this is the part that decides whether it works. These lenses only do their job while they are on the face. Part-time wear produces part-time results, so we spend real time on choosing a frame a child will not take off.
How is this different from ordinary spectacles?
An ordinary lens corrects vision and nothing else. A myopia control lens corrects vision and carries an additional structure across the periphery intended to slow the eye’s elongation. To look at, and to your child, they are simply glasses.
How often do we come back?
Considerably more often than the standard two-year adult check. The whole approach depends on measuring the rate of change, and the schedule is set at the first appointment based on your child’s history.

Contact lenses, fitted rather than sold

Daily, monthly and astigmatism lenses from ACUVUE, Alcon, Bausch & Lomb, CooperVision, Menicon and SEED, fitted at Queensway with the aftercare that should come with them.

Book a Contact Lens Fitting
Fitting

A contact lens sits on living tissue

Two people with an identical prescription can need entirely different lenses. Corneal curvature, tear film, how many hours you wear them and whether you work under air conditioning all change which lens will still be comfortable at 7pm.

That is why a fitting is a fitting and not an order. We establish the right lens, check how it sits and moves on your eye, and show you how to handle it safely. Then we see you again to confirm it is behaving as it should.

What we fit

Daily, monthly and astigmatism contact lenses

01

Daily disposable contact lenses

A fresh sterile lens every morning and nothing to clean. The lowest-maintenance and generally the most hygienic option, and the usual starting point for occasional wear.

02

Monthly contact lenses

More economical for full-time wear, with a care regime that has to be followed properly. We will show you exactly what that involves before you commit.

03

Contact lenses for astigmatism

Lenses weighted to stay oriented on the eye, for prescriptions an ordinary spherical lens cannot correct. Fit matters more here than in any other soft lens.

Common questions

About contact lenses

Do I need a fitting, or can I just order my prescription?
A spectacle prescription is not a contact lens prescription. Contact lenses require their own measurements, because the lens sits directly on the cornea rather than twelve millimetres in front of it. If you have never been fitted, you need a fitting.
Can I wear contact lenses if I have astigmatism?
Yes. Toric lenses are weighted so they hold their orientation on the eye rather than rotating. Getting the axis and the stability right is the whole job, and it is why these in particular should be fitted properly.
Are daily disposables better than monthlies?
They are lower-maintenance and avoid the risks that come with poor cleaning habits. Monthlies are more economical for daily full-time wear. The right answer depends on how often you actually wear them and how disciplined you are about care.
Can I still get spectacles as well?
You should. No one should be in contact lenses seven days a week with nothing to fall back on when eyes are tired or unwell. Most of our contact lens wearers keep a current pair of spectacles alongside.

Choosing

A frame is worn on the face every day for three years

Which makes it worth more than four minutes of deciding. Face shape matters less than most guides pretend; what actually matters is bridge fit, temple length, weight distribution and whether the frame is deep enough for the lens you need.

We will hand you things you would not have picked up, tell you honestly when something does not sit right, and say so when the frame you love will not take your prescription.

Sunglasses and prescription sunglasses

Singapore sits one degree off the equator. Sunglasses here are not an accessory, and tinting a lens properly is a different job from darkening it.

Plan Your Visit
Pilot-style sunglasses photographed in hard tropical sunlight
The point

Dark is not the same as protective

A dark lens without proper ultraviolet filtration is worse than no sunglasses at all, because the tint opens your pupil and lets more unfiltered light through. What matters is the filter, not the shade.

Polarisation is the second consideration. It removes the horizontal glare that comes off wet roads, car bonnets and water, which is why it makes such a difference driving here after a storm.

Options

Three ways to see in the sun

01

Prescription sunglasses

Your correction, made up in a tinted lens. The proper answer for anyone who drives, and available as single vision or progressive.

02

Polarised

Glare from road surfaces, water and glass cut out rather than dimmed. Noticeably more comfortable behind a windscreen.

03

Tinted to order

Colour and density chosen rather than taken off a shelf, which is how you end up with a lens that suits your eyes and not somebody else’s.
